Educate Your Campus
Clean Coal is a powerful modern myth, and the industry is spending millions of dollars, countless lobby days, and endless back room hours pumping it up as the savior of our energy crisis and planet. At this point, the coal industry and many politicians have promoted clean coal so much that they are starting to believe the tale.
But like a recent Reality Coalition PSA made by the Coen brothers’ tells us, “harnessing the awesome power of the word Clean,” is the only clean thing about clean coal. So make sure your campus knows this Earth Day that…
There’s no such thing as clean coal!
This is what to do:
- Do some research. Get the facts at the Reality Coalition’s website, and use this information as a jumping off point for your education initiative.
- Pick a topic. Coal has plenty of negative impacts, so it is up to you to choose which angle is most relevant to your campus. Your topic may be as broad as coal’s contribution to global warming, but here are some other ideas for you to consider:
- Mountain top removal
- Coal and indigenous peoples
- Coal’s stranglehold on political leaders
- Coal and the water we drink
- AND MANY MORE…
- EDUCATE! All that is left is to get the word out on your campus. You can do this in many different ways like holding a Teach-In on or around Earth Day, or passing out fact sheets at your Earth Day festival or concert. As this article shows, the myth of clean coal is still holding strong, and we need to get out in full force to bring people back to reality.
