Working with the Latino community: a better environment for all

As part of our efforts to grow and diversify the environmental movement and mobilize communities, Earth Day Network has launched different initiatives to engage the Latino community in the US in green initiatives.

For the third consecutive year, EDN took part in the National Latino Congreso, celebrated in Los Angeles July 19 and 20. The Congreso first broke new ground in 2006 with delegates representing over 260 endorsing organizations and individuals from 20 states creating a platform of 70 resolutions.

In 2006 and 2007, Earth Day Network proposed five resolutions for consideration, all of which were approved by the Plenary. This year, the goal of the Congreso was to turn resolutions into reality, so only amendments to old motions were accepted. Earth Day Network presented amendments to five resolutions, some of them in cooperation with groups like Oxfam and Prometheus, all of which gained the support of the participating delegates.

The amended resolutions demanded:

  • Higher goals for renewable energy sources
  • Better standards for environmental education and green schools
  • Transfer of all federal subsidies for the oil, coal, natural gas, and nuclear industries towards development of renewable energy
  • Federal funds to help populations around the world to cope with the devastating impacts of climate change
