Position Summary:
The Green
Schools Coordinator liaises with the Director of Education and Education
Coordinator in supporting Earth Day Network’s Green Schools Campaign. The Campaign’s
goal is to help green America’s schools within a generation, thereby improving
the lives of one in five Americans every day. Our programs generate national
and international interest on environmental education, school greening, and
Earth Day events and actions focused on climate change solutions involving K-12
schools. We seek
an energetic and dynamic professional to support our green school initiatives:
- The Green
Schools Campaign, which provides resources to teachers, students, and
their schools on how to green one’s school, with multiple school greening
projects planned both domestically and internationally for the 2009-2010
school year.
- Involvement
in our campaign to coordinate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day
globally for April 2010.
- Promotion
of energy education research and materials for our Educators’ Network and
schools nationwide focused on the post-2007 Energy Bill environment.
- With
Education Dept., support and determine policy goals, policy targets, and
advocacy strategies for federal, state, and local green school and
environmental education policy initiatives.
- Support
EDN’s Green Schools program, which seeks to significantly create 5 model
demonstration projects of sustainability at schools nationwide.
- The
continual creation of free and innovative environmental education
curricula and activities for K-12 teachers and educators.
The
Coordinator will be heavily involved in several of these initiatives, likely to
include travel to events or actions throughout the year and especially for Back
to School and Earth Day 2010.
Responsibilities:
The Coordinator
will support the Education Department in the following areas:
- Managing
and coordinating Earth Day Network’s national and international Green School projects for Back to School 2009-2010 and Earth Day 2010, including
logistics with schools and school districts, green project(s)
implementation, volunteer management, and project evaluation.
- Conducting
research on and assisting in the creation and continuance of EDN’s school
greening and environmental education materials, including curricula and
website development, school/teacher support, and outreach.
- Conducting
research on and creating materials for energy education focused on the
post-2007 Energy Bill environment, including information on conducting
energy audits, light bulb technology, and energy performance.
- Support
and coordinate our Green Schools campaign in five cities nationally over a
multi-year period, including the implementation of significant green
upgrades to school facilities.
- Monitoring
and analyzing federal, state and local initiatives in identified policy
areas including making recommendations for action, as well as developing
and implementing strategies to further EDN’s policy priorities.
- Supporting
and coordinating day-to-day logistics of the Education Department with the
Director and Education Coordinator, including operations, meetings, and
conferences.
- Working
with the Education Coordinator in the recruitment, administration, and
programmatic function of Education Dept. Interns.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s
degree required; Master’s is preferred.
- A strong
interest in and knowledge of current environmental issues, including green
building.
- A strong
interest in and knowledge of K-12 education (environmental or education
itself).
- Comfortable
handling multiple tasks.
- 1-2 years
of project management and event planning experience is preferred.
- Excellent
research and communication skills (verbal and written) in English.
Experience or ability to speak French, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese also
desirable.
- Team
player with outstanding interpersonal skills.
- Willingness
to travel, especially for Back to School 2009-2010 and Earth Day 2010.

Outreach Intern

Summary
Earth Day Network relies on
volunteers and interns to assist in ongoing campaigns as well as running
ongoing programs and office operations. Specific volunteer events are typically
held in the evenings during the week but this is subject to change as necessary
to meet EDN staff and volunteer availability. We seek to standardize our
volunteer program, broaden and increase participation from new constituencies
and provide a stable base for assisting with unexpected and urgent programmatic
needs.
We are seeking qualified
applicants for a Fall 2008 as well as Winter/Spring and Summer 2009 Volunteer
Coordinator Outreach Internships. Candidates may possess experience or interest
as a volunteer themselves, or volunteer coordination, volunteer events,
community outreach, event planning, or other operations/coordination
experience.
Responsibilities
The Volunteer Outreach
Coordinator Intern will work with network members and local community groups to
develop our relationships and reach. Additionally, the intern will identify and
implement innovative strategies to grow our volunteer capacity. Opportunities
exist for a variety of special projects and EDN is open to intern interest and
experience.
Specifically, Volunteer Outreach Coordinator interns, in collaboration with EDN

THere is a chance to combine your interest in environmental issues with your passion for education, and to make positive changes in K-12 schools nationwide - through curricula, events and Earth Day Network’s far-reaching Educators’ Network.
The Education Intern liaises with the Director of Education and the Education Coordinator at Earth Day Network (EDN) to support members EDN’s Educators’ Network and EDN’s school-based greening activities. The goal is to build widespread environmental and school greening education resources within K-12 schools across the US. This year, the focus is on creating materials and lessons on school greening, green jobs curriculum, green design, policy, and supporting teachers at selected schools across the country that teach “green,” civic minded lessons in environmentally degraded areas. Next, we are members of the Energy Action Coalition that runs the Campus Climate Challenge putting green energy on over 500 schools and campuses nationwide, and we would love your support for this or any of the above projects. Lastly, we want to connect with you on taking your interests and joining them with our expanding Education program. Any of these programs is open for your selection and likely to include travel to an event or action.
Responsibilities
The Education Intern will research, write, publish, fundraise, and coordinate outreach through:
- assisting in the development and dissemination of curricula and lesson plans on K-12 environmental education, school greening, and civics;
- coordinating outreach to network members and new constituents in their area of interest;

Summary
Like many non-profit organizations Earth Day network (EDN) relies on
information technology to help achieve high-impact results. For example, our
interactive website offers registration, tracking and coordination tools for
Earth Day participants, and frequent content updates. We recently acquired
tools to enable internet campaigns and communication with our members on
important issues.
EDN is seeking qualified
applicants for Fall 2008 and Winter/Spring 2009 IT Internships, with a strong
background in information management, analysis, technology, and communication
tools.
Responsibilities
The Information Technology
Intern will support organization and office technology needs on a daily basis.
Activities may include:
- Assist
with desktop and network administration for all users and interns.
- Implement
or Maintain online e-advocacy campaigns
- Maintain
supporter records; create, run, analyze reports on supporters, etc.
- Convert
legacy information to a relational database such as Microsoft Access.
- Research,
interview and develop proposals for new or alternative IT service
providers and vendors.

Communications/Marketing Internship (2 positions available)

Summary
The Communications/Marketing interns will work in conjunction with the Communications Department staff on a variety of communications initiatives ranging from media outreach to social network and video production to research and writing. As Earth Day Network prepares to commemorate the 40 th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010, interns will assist the communications staff in planning and promoting a variety of large-scale events and partnerships during the months leading up to April 2010. There may also be opportunities to attend Earth Day 40 th anniversary events. Intern projects may include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with event logistics for Earth Day 2010;
- Help develop/maintain marketing collateral for use across all departments;
- Assist in media outreach to print, radio and TV reporters at the national and local levels;
- Maintain press lists and update media kits;
- File and track media clips;
- Assist in managing Earth Day Network’s social media presence online;
- Assist in updating the Earth Day Network website;
- Write blog entries;
- Produce viral videos for use online as well as Earth Day TV;
- Attend events as needed; and
- Support the Communications Department staff in related research and overall efforts.
Interns at Earth Day Network are considered part of Earth Day Network’s staff and attend internal team meetings to discuss organization initiatives. In addition, interns have the opportunity to attend press conferences and hearings on Capitol Hill and the National Press Club.
Qualifications:
Strong oral and written communication skills are essential. Candidates should be able to use Microsoft Office programs and have knowledge of new media and web 2.0. They must have the ability to multi-task and learn quickly, be highly organized and detail-oriented. Candidates should be interested in, or currently be pursuing a degree in communications/marketing or a related field.

Global Day of Conversation on Climate, Sustainability and Energy Action Intern
Report to: Outreach Director

Background
Earth Day Network (http://www.earthday.net) and ICLEI USA (http://www.icleiusa.org) are partnering to host a Global Day of Conversation on Climate, Sustainability and Energy Action (GDC), April 22, 2010, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Conversations will be hosted by local elected officials in cities around the world in order to engage their communities on the issues of climate, energy and sustainability, with the ultimate goal of galvanizing the global community to produce measurable impacts advancing environmental protection.
Responsibilities
Global Day of Conversation Interns will support the work of the Outreach Director in Washington D.C. and her colleagues in the run-up to the GDC event. As the internships are all virtual, interns need not be based in Washington and we actively seek candidates who can contribute to our work from the following locations: India, China, Latin America (preferably Brazil), Mexico (especially in Mexico City), Canada, a western European country other than the United Kingdom, Japan and Africa. Specific responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Communicating with the GDC team via email and Skype (access to a computer and the internet is required)
- Researching and contacting pertinent member organizations and staffs of local elected officials
- Facilitating the official registration of events
- Maintaining communication with registered cities until the Global Day of conversation
